Who says I can't wax my steel cogs? I've been doing it for years. Use the same precedure as with paint waxing(buff it shiny) and it works well.
I should note that my cassette is un-pinned, so I can change individual cogs out at will, which makes that job a ton easier.
I didn't think that it could be done. It seems liek a hassle to me. Won't the wax wear off after the first few miles? I would think that the wax would wear off wher the chain contacts the teeth on the cog....
