The tooth contact area is delat with by the chain lube. The non contact portion, which is more suceptible to rusting keeps the wax on it for at least a month or 2. I take my cassettes apart all the time during the season to take all the grass and junk out after races anyway, so its a simple matter to polish and wax in the process.
