Need some emergency derailleur help...like right now

I have a ride early tomorrow morning and a race Sunday. I'm still new at working with derailleurs. Anywho I just had my bike converted too a double with a double (new FD, cranks, and bottom bracket. I ended up putting on an upgraded pair of cranks tonight same brand just went from 105 Octalink to Ultegra Octalink, even kept the same bottom bracket. When I put the chain back on the front derailleur was throwing the chain off the big ring when it shifted up from the small chainring.

I messed around with the limiter screw (the one closest to the outside of the derailleur and it seems to be working fine now. I'm still going to take it to a shop but I doubt I will have time before my race on Sunday, so I need to be confident with my adjustments. My questions are is the limiting screw how you would adjust this problem? Also when you adjust the limiting screw should you be in the small ring if you're adjusting it for the big ring? When I tried to adjust the limiting screw when I was in the big ring it didn't really move but if I put it in the small ring it worked fine. It's probably also being finicky because I'm using 105 triple shifters adjusted for a double.

Any late night help would be appreciated.
