Yeah, most people tend to think that firing a gun is easy and that if they needed to, they could hit something, especially if the random guy in the movie can pick one up and do the same.

No one realizes that it actually takes practice to be proficient with a weapon (in this case a firearm), and that it's generally hard to hit anything at more than 10 feet if you don't practice regularly. Then throw in nerves or any number of other things that are out of the ordinary, it would be damn near impossible for the average person to hit anything at all.

A lot of people don't even know how to correctly operate a firearm.
