I [usually] replace my chain every 2-3 thousand miles, because it keeps the cassette in better shape than if you let it go.
I didn't follow my own advice the last time and had to replace my 12x27 cassette after replacing the chain due to the chain doing the same thing your did--not catching; riding along the top of the teeth.
