I didn't follow my own advice the last time and had to replace my 12x27 cassette after replacing the chain due to the chain doing the same thing your did--not catching; riding along the top of the teeth.

I guess I'm not a sucker and should replace the chain more often because even though that cassette looks fine it obviously won't mesh with the chain. I'm just starting to realize that if you ride your bike enough you will need to replace things like brake pads, chains, cables. I used to just do tires. I also need to keep track of how many miles I put on each bike.
