My roommate has some six one one shoes that look like skate shoes but have the space for cleats. He wears them even when he isn't riding clipless pedals but he rides mountain bikes and isn't dealing with backpedaling or hard sprinting.

Ive had Diadora mountain shoes and now Sidi dominators. The Diadoras were more comfortable to walk in but I try hard not to walk in the Sidi's. Just carry an extra pair of shoes. It seems annoying at first but you get used to it.
