My tips.
  1. Turn big circles then be able to turn small circles.
  2. That more comfortable riding position you are seeking, forget it. Try to focus on lifting your head, straightening your back, locking your abdomen and then pushing forward - that longer stem more aero position. This will engage your hamstrings - those most difficult of muscles to find.
  3. I don't agree with the pull up method, I am a believer in unweighting the leg as the drive commences on the other leg.
  4. Don't drive too far down on the pedal stroke as it isolates the quad.
  5. I think.... something else but but I have forgotten because my wife is asking me questions about houses.....

Lastly I think that there are different styles you adopt for different terrain - hills, flats, crits, mountains and TT. You need to subtly adapt to each.

I think with your deep zen for biking you will achieve success. Good Luck.
Nice post. I think a lot of the "scrape off the bottom of the shoe" people totally misunderstand where this action is supposed to take place. They think it is from 6:00 to 9:00 but it's supposed to be more like 3:00 to 6:00, with the heel totally up by the bottom and getting that leg totally out of the way so the other one can do it's turn with no resistance.
