You say it was a T intersection. if you were going straight through the T, with the intersection to your left, you are not even crossing traffic. This, IMO, is even safer than going right on red at a 4 way. Such intersections should have a stop, look, go rule just like right on red. Ofcourse, this would cut into police revenues and we all know that that is prioroty number one.

I would take this to court in a heart beat. Tell the judge you were in no way doing anything even remotely unsafe. Explain that the act of stopping, coming out of your cleats, then getting back into them is potentially more dangerous.

Also note that bikes, as a rule do not trip light sensors. I run red lights frequently because of this fact, both on my bike and motorcycle. Haven't been bagged for it yet, but, if I do, that will be my defense.
