This is dependent on what you are getting flats from. I wrote Schwalbe in regards to their recommendation for a tire to deal with goat head thorns and they graciously told me the puncture resistant material covered the rolling contact part of the wheel and that goat head thorns have a remarkable ability to flip around and still puncture the tire outside this area.
That having been said if you don't have goat heads then the Schwalbe's are awesome tires, I really like my Marathon Winters. If you do have goat heads or a LOT of road debris the Armadillos are the way to go. They use a special kevlar weave from the others and have a wider band of protection, and normally beat out other brands in puncture resistance. They are not responsive and are a little slow, but it was a trade off I was willing to make since I was getting 4-5 flats a week.
Isn't that, generally, what one would get with a
Marathon Extreme?
PS - I don't have to deal with goatheads, so I love my Marathon Supremes...
