What, exactly are you trying to accomplish?

If cost is a major factor, keep in mind that shifters are generally the most expensive component to replace and, if you decide to upgrade to 8 or 9 speed, you'll need new shifters. If your goal is just to get back on the trail with minimum expense, I'd just get a new chain and a 7-speed cassette.
