I can think of a handful of other wheelsets that are more durable, lighter, and/or more aero in the same price range.

Please enlighten me.

Both serious and completely waggish comments are welcome.
Never underestimate the power of Mavic's OEM Machine. Scott pays OEM pricing for those $1,000 Ksyriums. Figure about $300 a set @ their cost, that allows them to charge more for their complete bicycle. It adds considerable perceived value for most high end bike consumers. Mavic is the big name in bike wheels, it sells bicycles. And they are damn good wheels. Indestructible, I have three sets of Ksyriums that have about 40,000 road miles on them at this point. Maintenance to date? Two rebuilt rear hubs. Zero broken spokes, zero wheel true jobs. That's amazing in my view.
