I had kinda wanted to stay away from down as well. Other than the price, if it gets wet it's worse than useless. I think I might do better with synthetics. It obviously won't compress quite as much, but the Lamina for example that I was looking at seems to compress down to the size of a lunchbox pretty well, which is small enough for me.
