The fat tab on the locating washer (part #2) needs to be pointing down when the shifter is mounted normally. It can be mounted 4 different ways, so it's easy to screw up. Once you learn the proper orientation you'll never forget.
It's strange, because the dark colored washer I referred to isn't shown in the diagram. It's orientation is the same as part number 2. It goes between part 2 and the shift lever itself, which isn't numbered in the diagram. But with the diagram, it does remind me how it all goes together, thanks-
