80's Specialized Allez History help
Another 80's Allez thread.
I have read all about the Allez history posted on this site. That is about all I know along with my own history which is novice
In General I know that Early Allez were made by 3Ren. Later Mass produced but Japanese Makers such as Nishiki or Miyata etc. Most of this is outlined here up to about 1984.
I have an Allez. Second owner. Lucky find in my size and never ridden sitting at an estate sale. I had an 83 Allez once. It had the Specialzed/Suntour Superbe Pro combo kit on it. I got rid of it after the first child and mortgage....sounded good then....
Anyway I mention this because the frame I have here now is not like the 3Ren's or the one I had. First it is labeled Tange Prestige Tubing frame and fork. Second, the Down Tube Sticker says only Allez and does not include Specialized. In addition the fork crown lugs are not as pointed as either of the named here however quite nice and look unique. The other difference is the Brake Bridge on the rear stays. It looks quite beefy compared, however the braze lug fittings it is attached to are similar. Frame lugs are quite nice but again different than the long 3Ren and the rather bland 83 I had. Last the seatstay ends have the Specialized S not the Allez marking
The last detail which is puzzling is the groupo. It is entirely Shimano DA 7400 with the non aero levers; even the headset and BB are DA, hubs too. From my recollection I never remember the DA group on any Allez of that era and apart from a few of the 3 Rens Campy Record none had a complete group. All mixed with Specialized etc..
This fact might mean it was sold as a frame only.
Given the DA Group I think this dates it to 84 or 85. I took it to an old Specialized dealer and they were a bit foggy as we all are here on the date. Looking at the BB it says <EO> Medalist; That is not really a distinction as those were quite common high quality....
The guy in the shop said he thought at one time the now deceased David Tesch made a few in San Marco out of Prestige but he new of no know way to identify one if it was true at all. the thought that it may have been a built up frame might suggest that it was a Tesch if there were such a thing
Any way, any help is appreciated. I will post pics asap
Regards
JC
