The 105 left hand shifter is for TRIPLE and DOUBLE. And I have just done the conversion from Double to to triple keeping the 105 shifter. (Planning on a Mountain trip some time this year and the other bikes are staying compact double). What is not interchangable though is the front derailler. They are different.

And gearhead-- The ultegra brifters are different for double and triple cranks.
