I've toured in Mexico twice in the past decade, once in the Yucatan, the other time in the states of Michoacan & Jalisco. I also rode my bike in and around San Cristobal in Chiapas for several weeks 2 years ago. Also, I was in Mexico without my bike less than a month ago. I've never had any problems on or off the the bike, however I've always avoided the US border area. I agree with 3d3vart about the wonderful food & friendly people. While I wouldn't hesitate to return to Mexico for more touring, I would still avoid the border area.
