Definitely ask for it back. This kind of thing happens at bike shops. The part gets put down, they get busy and rushed, mistakes happen.
Bring in the wheelset or the whole bike to show the mis-matched skewers (I'm assuming you had a front/rear set) and explain to them that you dropped it off with and X Lite and got crappy steel. They should replace it.
