Huffy Service First used to be the biggest company with a traveling team of assemblers. They would go from store-to-store and build the required number of bikes for the store. They provided their own tools and equipment while the store would provide the workspace. The wages were based on piece-work, they were paid by the number of built units. There were bonuses for the workers for exceeding a certain number of builds per hour or per store visit, so the competition for the most builds was strong.

I know this because I used to be a vendor to Wal-Mart for several products and frequently ran into the Huffy guys, particularly during the Christmas season and during the Spring. I watched them build bikes using compressed-air tools, Park tools, crescent wrenches and wire cutters. There is no way a bike, even a very cheap Wal-mart bike could be properly built the way they do it. Only speed mattered.

If you are even a remotely conscientious cyclist, you wouldn't last long on one of those build teams. You would always have the fewest built because you were trying to do it properly.
