It's true that you don't skip or skid a motor cycle, but downshifting the transmission puts a lot of force through the drivetrain, and downshifting does slow a bike down, I think a belt drive on a fixie wouldnt be a problem, though I'm not sure how you would be able to have a chainstay that seperates to allow belt changes without compromising frame stiffness
