Try exacting the H-limit, L-limit, and B-limit screws on your RD. It's probably not your BB, as you already stated "There is no grind in the BB when the chain is off the rings and it spins freely and smoothly". Adjusting the limit screws fixed a similar problem I had with my 7800.
