Can the Candy SL be ridden without cleated shoes for short distances ~ 2 miles or so?

Getting these pedals for my cyclocross/touring bike but want to be able to commute to work (~2 miles) without having to wear cycling shoes. Do these pedals work for that?

The rest of my riding (and the bulk of it) will be with cleats. I have checked out the Shimano hybrid pedals but they are large and heavy, and I don't want SPDs anyway. Thanks.
