It probably has to do with differing objectives. The reason that most people buy a tandem is because they have a partner they want to ride with but whose physical ability is a little different. In other words, the prime objective is to ride with a particular person regardless of that person's ability.

Those theoretical discussions always start with assuming equal physical ability. In my experience that's rare in the tandem world.
