Look, the mechanism sticks up out of the "platform" with these and any other SPD compatible type pedal. Sure you can pedal with ordinary shoes in a pinch, but it's not very practical. You would be a lot better off getting Shimano or knock off pedals with SPD on one side and regular pedal on the other.
