Not all road bikes are racing bikes. Not all riders on road bikes are driven solely by speed. If I were just interested in going "fast" (what is fast anyway?), I'd sell my bikes and buy a motorcycle.
A road bike is an efficient, comfortable way to get excercise and go further than my legs alone can take me in a reasonable amount of time.
Why go fast? Are you in a hurry?
