The_D, 58 doesn't sound at all big for a rider who's 6'1". I'm 5'10" and ride 56 or 58 depending on top tube. I've done a lot of bike fitting; got paid for it in the '80's and early '90's. Lots of things come into play.

Bookman3, I'm assuming you can ride the bikes you're considering a bit. Even spinning on a trainer can tell you a lot. There's an old book "The Ten Speed Bicycle" that has some pretty good old style fitting information. I wish you luck in your hunt.
