a little more about bike theft in amsterdam: in all honesty, i feel WAAAY more sketch leaving my bike locked up in new york... junkies in amsterdam are interested in turning around bikes as fast and as easily as they can. it's not interesting for them to rack someone's high-end road or track bike when they can move a typical 'everyday' bike much, much faster. a proper kryptonite chain and american lock, AND locking up to something means that you'll more than likely find your ride exactly where you left it. the bikes i've had stolen here were locked up with cheap locks, or bikes that i hadn't bothered to lock to something... i've also managed to keep bikes locked up 365-days-a-year on the street for 3 to 4 years! the real danger here is that some drunk/stoned hater kicks in your wheels or otherwise messes with things. that said, i NEVER leave any of the bikes i care about on the street longer than need be...
