I think it applies to cycling, as well. When you require cyclists to be segregated from motorists, cyclists will not have the same rights and freedoms as motorists.
If I was a racial minority who followed Dr. King, I believe I would be rather distressed by the comparison of so-called "segregation" of bicyclists from motorists with the segregation fought by the civil rights movement.

Perhaps only those of us who lived through the civil rights fights of the 50's and 60's and even today, and the fight for equal access for those with disabilities, which continues today, appreciate the differences.

Bicyclists, you have it pretty good. Not perfect, but nowhere similar in comparison.
