I also had a similar problem on a wide Specialized crossroads tire(for a hybrid). After checking, and re-mounting,etc,etc(and I have built some pretty good wheels in my day), I realized the rear tire was actually"egged", as you described! It does happen!..Got rid of that tire, and,replaced it, and the wheel is fine!
