Cool! Two areas of cycling history I'd like to read/see more of are the American 6 Day scene and the "Clubman" races (time trials really) in England on racers with Sturmey-Archer internal gear hubs.

They had a handful of today's pro riders out for a photo shoot and interview. They put them on an assortment of vintage/classic bicycles. One was like 100 years old. One had wooden rims, I think. One had those handle-driven rear derailleurs. Amazing photos. And the rider reactions...For the most part, they were in awe of their predecessors riding like 2-300km on the bikes--they were so uncomfortable.
Pro Cycling out of England I think but won't swear.I read the article and remember the current pros reactions similar to the way you do.
