i use a biker up ahead as an opportunity to 'chase'
but when i do catch up i chat - i've met riding buddies that way. once you put forth the effort to chase, you are pretty much committed to keeping up or if the other cyclist is the snob (out on a recovery ride or something) then having enough left to blow past.

and i'm not even sure snob is the right word here.....
