40mm is within the spec of most CF fork manufacturers. My thought was that if I went to an Al steerer...I am no weight weeny and like CF forks...I could be a bit less focused on stack height...a bit more robust fork in other words...but perhaps this is a myth. In summary...perhaps the issue of notch sensitivity of CF at the stem to spacer interface is eclipsed by the technical challenge of creating a robust Al to CF bond at the fork crown.
