I doubt if the 40mm of spacers is of concern at all. The carbon steerers I've read specs for are 40-50 mm, and if that's true for his fork, he's within spec. and therefore shouldn't change to aluminum on that account. Of course he should check the spec on his fork to be sure.
Which forks are those? My Winwood fork manual says 25mm max for their carbon steerers. I recall reading the same for my Look fork but can't to seem find it in the manual, though interestingly enough, Look says you can use a tubing cutter on the steerer tube. You hear that, DaveSSS?
