+10 on Speedplay Zero
i switched from 4+ years on Ultegra SPD-SL to Speedplay Zero stainless steel pedals ~10 months ago, ~7000+km later, no regrets. Here are the reasons Zero pedal (IMO) is better than SPD-SL and Keo.
1. zero float or plenty of float, you choose how much float you like. I like a lot.
2. double sided entry
3. more q-factor adjustment than either SPD-SL or Keo offers
4. q-factor and float are *independently* adjusted. Impossible to do with SPD-SL and Keo.
5. alternate fore/aft extender baseplates allow to move cleat 10-15mm further back than SPD-SL/Keo, this cured my achilles heel problem in a matter of 2-3 weeks.
6. optional longer pedal spindles for wider q-factor still
7. due to better float and q-factor the "tuning" of the cleat for a rider is vastly simpler. I always had to micro-fiddle with SPD-SL cleats to get the right float. Royal PIA.
to those who are complaining about dirt in cleats - you must wear cleat covers, never any issues. to those complaining about loose or tight cleats - follow installation instructions - tighten the bolts correctly and no problems. to those complaining about lack of pro riders on speedplay - 7 or 8 teams on Tour of CA this year were on Speedplay Zero. Plus add Team CSC wins in Paris-Roubaix and Tour De France. To those complaining about Zero small platform: Not true, the stiff carbon sole of the shoe is the platform. To those complaining about putting 2-3 drops of oil on cleat springs, i dont know what to say except that why dont you complain about having to lube the chain too?
Speedplay Zero is IMO the best overall road pedal on the market today. Not fault free but better than the rest.
The negatives are the very high price of Zero cleats and extender baseplates (which should be standard baseplates btw). The leg length shim kits are also expensive. But the added comfort more than makes up for it. I would not use Keo or SPD-SL pedals anymore.
