imo, stick with something that's meaningful to you. If you join a team or club, wear their kit. If you do a century ride or tour buy the associated jersey.

Generally that type of gear is pretty high quality (and you won't look like a poseur/Fred if that sort of thing matters to you). Plus you'll have memories/stories associated with the kit instead of it just being some random sponsor/team you don't really care about.
