you didnt actually mention whether you wanted to ride SS or fixed. if you want to start with SS, why not consider the windsor clockwork, i just ordered one, and they seem like a fantastic value, plus you actually get brakes right out of the box, which is a good safe way to learn the ropes.

p.s. the clockwork comes with a flip-flop hub, so all you would need is a fixed cog and lockring to go fixed should you want to. just something to consider.
