I do this all the time. Hard to judge the motivation of the car behind me; i figure in any case they are acting courteously by not trying to sneak by with little room; so I can do them a favor.
Don't forget if you have a rear view mirror, you can always wave people by as ya see them approach, and the response from cars has always been remarkable, in my experience.
