Exactly, lots of touring bikes are set up with mtb cranks and low gearing for climbing.

Yes you need a bottom pull, but there are plenty of mtb bottom pull front deraillers. You can also use a road front derailler as well.

I'm using a simple Shimano Sora triple road front derailler. Works great with a 24x36x48. Even though it's made for a 52 big ring and a 22 tooth difference....it will handle more than that, obviously.
