You may want to have the entire brake pad surface on the rim for safety sake. So, to err on the safe side, a quality brake pad, like Kool Stop, as suggested is probably your best bet. You may also want to clean your rims and dirty brake pads. I use rubbing alcohol. Irregular micro-surfaces can create vibrations that cause the squealing you experience. That has always worked for me.
