It was smaller and not as active back then. I could see that the idea might be that most cyclists between the ages of 25 and 50 (or so) would have families, and that a lot of them might not ride for events or on events, so a forum like that could potentially be appealing.
Maybe, every time someone here complains that he/she cannot ride because of their spouse and kids, we should direct him/her to the Recreation and Family forum ... or the mods should move the thread there.
