Your wife is different than mine -- and different than most. You're not going to find too many grown-up females that will enjoy riding around in a dress and heels on a Friday night -- let alone a nice walk down a steep hill to catch a bus. And while a cab is fine, it's a lot less "simple" than simply hopping into your car, and the typical cab ride around here is 20-30 bucks. Doesn't take much of that before you're spending as much for cab fare as you would on owning a car.
I just skip the heels. We walk/bike/bus to our chosen restaurant or coffee shop. The bus or walking is best for date night because we can use the transit time to talk which we find difficult when biking and distracting when driving. It reminds us of when we started dating and would walk from campus to the nearby coffee shop to flirt. Or when we'd take the bus into the city for dinner. We can sort of forget about 2 kids, jobs, and responsibility for a bit and pretend we are young and care free. I love car free dates.
