You should upgrade as soon as you can. Don't worry about not finishing in the top 10 in cat 5. Get your 10 races in, try to learn how to ride in a pack, and learn to ride smart. That's all you'll ever get from cat 5.

When upgrading there's no requirement for finish place and there's really no reason to worry about not being able to hang in the 4's. The races are longer and if there's a speed difference, it's negligible.
