No wonder you are happy with your circumstances. Perhaps you should recognize that your fortunate circumstances are not that common in the U.S. and your experience cannot be extrapolated to fit too many other places.
I think that cities that laid out on a grid tend to be very bikeable, due to the sheer number of available routes. There are hundreds of cities, towns and post-war suburbs throughout the U.S. that have a grid topology -- those who choose to live without a car have a wide variety of options.
That said, I don't think car-free living is for everybody, and I'm not evangelical about it. I basically do it because I'm cheap, not because I'm trying to make some sort of ideological statement
