The spacing is very close and many people report having fine operation between the two. If it makes you feel any better I was recently brought a rig that was an old "lay around" rig of a current pro-tour rider and found it was a Campy 9 running a Shimano 9 cassette.
I couldn't get it to shift 1 of the gears very well, but the rest worked fine.
Same here. I tried a Campy 9spd shifter w/ a shimano 9spd cassette and was only able to shift smoothly at the top and bottom of the gears. Maybe mixing 10's w/ 9's works....I dunno. All my bikes have Shimano.
