shimano fd2203/rd2200: upgrade to 1056/6500?
i have an old fuji league i "inherrited" (it was here when we moved in) which i use as a permanent fixture on the mag trainer. it fits perfectly, and actually works sorta nicely.
the shifting, however, can be a pain. even when adjusted, the tension doesn't "pop" the chain to the next ring/cog the way my other groups do; it's more of a sluggish nudge.
the front is an fd2203; the rear is an rd2200.
i was considering rigging the cranks to a double and using an fd1056 and rd6500 i have laying around.
my main questions:
1) is it worth it? i'm not a mechanic, so i may simply not be dialing the derailleur cables optimally. that said, the machine doesn't warrant a $50 tune up if switching to a different group (one that's been sitting in a box of spare components) will do the trick. what i'm getting at, is: will i notice the difference on a trainer that's not seeing a road or hills?
2) will they work with downtube shifters? i've never really f.cked with downtube shifters before; this is actually the only bike i've ever had that uses them. since both rear derailleurs are 9 speed, can i continue to use them? how about the front? can i use this shifter (which was previously used with a triple) with a double? if not, i can put my spare set of sti on, but if the answer to #1 is no, it definitely isn't worth the time.
thanks...
