After quite a bit of 'research' on other sites, I am becoming convinced that you are correct. A Deluxe Varsity produced a year or two after the line was no longer listed in the sales catalogs. It was probably better to put something out there than simply crush the frames left lying around.

I'll try to get at least a block letter SCHWINN decal for it, and leave it at that. Spruce it up a bit, and find a buyer. It is not a bike that I feel the need to keep.
