Ok. this sounds terrible. but when i wear a helmet i feel less aware of my surroundings and therefore more vulnerable. the same goes with any kind of eye wear (sunglasses, goggles). I've been hit many many times but not for the last year or so. i don't like helmets because they distance me from the experience. but i don't have anything against them and don't look down on people wearing them. i think it is a personal choice that I'm fine either way with
