your best bet is to just take some 600grit sand paper and frost the lens to make the light coming out less harsh to those directly behind you.

and it has somewhere around a 60 degree viewing angle for the centre spot where you can actually see that it's bright and 160 degrees for spill where you'll see it's red, but not very bright.
