You're completely right. The prep work is much more difficult than the actual welding. Ti is quite easy to weld, but you have to do it in an inert atmosphere. I think Ti is way easier to weld than aluminum. It's a lot like stainless steel. The inert atmosphere thing is not tough to do, but it can be time consuming, and time is money.
