There are all kinds of hybrids, some targeted towards more aggressive riders.

I'm thinking a flat bar road bike might be the ticket for you. They have wider tires than a standard road bike, and of course, MTB style flat bars. Something like a Specialized Sirrus. Maybe you could find a 2008 model in the price range your looking for. There might be others that are less expensive.
